Road Rage
Last Saturday, all of us were driving around in the van running errands. Chad was driving and experiencing road rage at various times throughout the day. I have tried to convince Chad to stop yelling at complete strangers for years now, but he enjoys it. Maybe it’s therapeutic to yell and raise your heart rate to show your frustration to some poor girl who’s “waiting for a note from her mother” to make a turn. MC automatically asks, “What was that car doing?” when she hears Chad lay on the horn. Anyway, Saturday as someone was breaking one of Chad’s driving rules, Chad yelled, “Get out of the road, fatty!!!!!!” That is a normal comment that we all expect and ignore from Chad. What came next was hysterical. SF started saying, “Get out road, fat-ty, Get out road, fat-ty.” Chad and I were cracking up in the front seat (SF is still rear-facing so she couldn’t see our reactions). Chad realized that he needed to make some changes, and promised to do so, but that’s easier said than done. Before you know it Chad yells, “Get out of the way, you idiot!” Sure enough, SF starts saying, “You id-iot, id-iot, get out way.” Of course, MC starts correcting her younger sister, “Sarah, we do not say that word. Only Daddy says that word. That is a word for only Mommies and Daddies to say.”

I love it! Once you realize that your language is being imitated, it certainly can make you think before you speak. Spelling out words we don't want Caroline to say has beocme commonplace in our house (and car).
